The situation
The owner was the brand, the best clinician, and the unofficial HR department. Directors had titles. Few had authority. Staff waited to see what the owner would do, which meant the owner never quite left the floor.
The work
A two-day owner-and-directors offsite, then a short principles engagement so the rules of the practice were written with the people who would live them. Coaching continued with the owner and one director who was ready to hold the building.
What changed
Hiring, patient-experience exceptions, and therapist development stopped defaulting to the owner. The owner still treated — by choice, on a smaller caseload — and the directors had a shared language for when to decide without a hallway tap on the shoulder.
